Rupert Giles (known to a few as Ripper) wasn’t an ordinary Watcher, and that turned out to be beneficial because Buffy Sommers was far from being an ordinary Slayer. Together, the two of them, along with the rest of the Scooby Gang, defended Sunnydale and the world from the evil forces within the Hellmouth. At least they did until they destroyed it. Sunnydale, that is; not the world.
