In a time when super foods like goji berries, chia seeds and wheat grass are taking center stage and words like high-protein, gluten-free, and organic are becoming part of people’s everyday vocabulary, it’s refreshing to see that there are still connoisseurs of junk food. One of these connoisseurs, Emilie Baltz, wrote a book titled the Junk Foodie Recipe Book, which will guide you on how to make dreamy, never-seen-before junk food concoctions.
We all know that junk food is bad for us, but everywhere we go junk food is readily available and begging to be consumed. Most of all, the variety is spectacular. And there always seems to be a new product to try. For instance, this year the Oreo cookie turned 100 and so they made a special Oreo with colorful sprinkles in the middle. What’s a person supposed to do… just ignore? The key is not to fight it but to give in every little once in a while.

Whenever I travel to the US, most of the things that I bring back across the border are new junk foods that I’ve never tried before or that can’t be obtained in Canada. The most recent purchase that comes to mind are the Vanilla Cupcake Flavored Goldfish Graham Crackers. Yum! And of course, I won’t leave without buying a few 2-L bottles of Cherry Coke. Every trip down south is the same where I race up and down the snack aisles at Target with my shopping cart singing, “I love America!”
This book accepts junk food for what it is and shows you how to make junkfood-ade. (When life throws you junk food, make junkfood-ade?) Instead of wallowing in self-pity and negative thoughts about eating junk, celebrate junk food’s existence and make glorious masterpieces out of it.
