There was a time when virtual pets were the in thing. When the craze for Tamagotchis and whatnots died down, it was ok because no real animals were harmed. The Non Virtual USB Aquarium

Unlike typical computer applications that only appear on screen, this is the computer-powered desktop aquarium that provides a comfortable habitat for real fish. The aquarium plugs into a USB port and continually recirculates water through a filtration system. The attached gooseneck lamp has six LEDs that cast light onto a desk or the interior of the fish tank and LEDs inside the aquarium project colored light.

An integrated digital clock has an alarm and displays the date and the indoor temperature, and a compartment next to the tank holds writing utensils and desk items.
