Wow, seeing this list is a massive blast from the past. I specifically remember that Digital Storm deal mentioned in the post, where you could save $400 and get a free warranty upgrade—back in 2011, that was a huge chunk of change for a high-end gaming rig! It really makes me realize how much the “enthusiast” market has evolved since then.
Personally, I was always more of a budget builder, often scavenging parts from enterprise environments to see what I could repurpose. I actually remember around that time finding a 570-Watt server power supply from a decommissioned office rack. I spent an entire weekend figuring out the pinouts just to get it working in my home PC for more stability. There’s something so reliable about those old 570-Watt server units https://serverorbit.com/power-supplies/server-power/570-watt; they were built like industrial equipment and could handle a beating that standard consumer PSUs of that era just couldn’t.
Do you think we’ve lost a bit of that “tinkerer” spirit today now that hardware is so much more standardized and easy to assemble?
