Blessed the fruit may be but not all are at peace in the Republic of Gilead, not when lowly handmaids risk the wrath of their master by scratching words like ‘Nolite te Bastardes Carborundorum’ into their walls.
Of course, it’s understandable why Offred, along with every other handmaid in the country, could get behind a motto like ‘Don’t let the bastards grind you down.’
Our world isn’t quite as dark as the one pictured in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale but the advice Offred discovered in her closet is still a good bit of wisdom to live by.
