Classic cars are awesome, and you can’t get much more classic than the Stirling Engine 1900 Mercedes. This little replica of the car, which is completely functional, lets you enjoy a bygone era of engineering while having fun at the same time.
This unique-looking sports car is powered by an external combustion Stirling engine, which was made in Germany from machine-tooled solid brass, stainless steel, and aluminum. The engine, using the thermodynamic principle of regenerative heat, is powered by the expansion and compression of air. An alcohol burner in the rear heats a cylinder; while a quick flip of its dual brass flywheels sets the engine’s displacement and working pistons into motion up to 1,500 rpm. The alternating heated and cooled air inside the pistons drives the twin connecting rods that spin the flywheels that drive the 2″- diameter rubber-bound rear wheels.
While the mechanics are from an engine designed in 1818, the body style is that of a 1900 Mercedes 35 HP. The front wheels can be turned manually with the steering wheel, letting the car drive in 24-inch circles, and non-toxic exhaust from a full burner of ethyl alcohol will keep this machine marvel running for up to 15 minutes.
