The Imperial Probe Droids were pod-transported en masse to their widely-ranged destinations. Once in place, they would begin their search, attempting to ferret out the presence of Rebel occupation. In the course of this endeavor, the probe droids would openly attack any perceived threat, as with the case of Han Solo on Hoth, and should their mission become compromised, the droids would engage a self-destruct function, this latter measure preventing the Rebels from cannibalizing any information from the droid’s memory banks.
