It really didn't start off as a "statement", for that I'm sure, but along the way it sorta looked like a commentary on the perpetual milking of the franchise and especially the prequel thing. I thought that by means of making, remaking, packaging and repackaging etc the original series is treated like it's handicapped and dated.
