Flying Car - airplane modeNo, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. That really is a Flying Car. The future has arrived and one vehicle now lets you be master of both the road and the sky.

An electro-mechanical system inside the two-person cockpit is used to deploy the self-locking wings into place, transforming a street-legal car into a Light Sport aircraft in 30 seconds. All you need is 1700 feet of runway and the 100 hp, four-cylinder engine will do the rest, letting the three-bladed propeller boost you to a maximum airspeed of 115 mph. That same engine, along with the continuously variable transmission, rear-wheel drive lets you cruise the roads at a comfortable 65 mph.

Flying Car - car modeWhile you will need a little training before proclaiming yourself Skymaster, you won’t have to worry about not having the right controls for the job because you’ll have the familiar steering wheel, accelerator, and brake to use while driving, while dual pedals and a joystick, along with sophisticated modern avionics aid navigation from a touch-screen LCD, are used when flying.

Details:

  • Built to fly within VFR conditions
  • 23-gallon gas tank provides a 425 nautical mile range (35 mpg on the road)
  • Car mode 6′ 8″ H x 7′ 6″ W x 19′ 6″ L
  • Aircraft mode 6′ 6″ H x 26′ 6″ W x 19′ 9″ L
  • Empty weight 970 lbs.
  • Requires a Sport Pilot Certificate.
  • Special conditions and guarantee limitations apply

The price tag isn’t exactly light as air, but what do you expect from a vehicle that makes you both Skymaster and Roadking? The Flying Car is available for $350,000 from Hammacher Schlemmer.
